COMMUNITY

On the merit of 'charity begins at home' it is our primary obligation that the education, social and welfare efforts of the Boustead Group are first and foremost spearheaded towards our major shareholder, the members of the Malaysian Armed Forces and their families.

Annual contributions to Yayasan Warisan Perajurit, a foundation jointly established by Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) Group of Companies and spearheaded by Boustead Holdings Berhad to assist in the education of children and disadvantaged members of the Armed Forces are a prerequisite in our community outreach efforts. Since the foundation's establishment in 2000, well over 20,000 children have been provided with scholarships spanning various educational levels be it primary, secondary or tertiary. In terms of funds disbursed, the Boustead Group has to date contributed in excess of RM12 million to this exceptionally worthy cause.

In addition to scholarships, we have made available a unique and attractive scheme which provides personnel of the Armed Forces as well as their children rebates to undertake courses at our very own and prestigious The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.

Being at the forefront of various sectors in the Malaysian economy and having a strong, diversified, stream of earnings, the Boustead Group is able to support entrepreneurial efforts and to this end we continue to work very closely with PERHEBAT, a statutory body established to offer various skill training programmes for retiring and retired Armed Forces personnel.

We have in the last decade assisted PERHEBAT to establish various joint ventures with both local and foreign partners with the aim of enhancing the quality and number of programmes offered by PERHEBAT. We are pleased to note that PERHEBAT has been quite successful in producing/training strong and productive entrepreneurs to the Malaysian economy from among the retired armed forces personnel.

Housing being a significant requirement for the well-being of society, the Boustead Group takes great pride in providing quality and desirable low to medium cost homes at its premier property development projects namely Mutiara Rini in Johor and Mutiara Damansara in Selangor. Once again, this tangible effort to elevate and improve the plight of the lower to middle class is directed primarily at members of the Armed Forces.

The Group also takes great care in ensuring that disabled members of the Armed Forces who have served their country are provided with financial assistance in the form of monthly disablement allowances.

In our efforts to reach out to the broader community, the Group has developed a 60-acre urban forest in Mutiara Rini Johor for sports and other social activities. Within the same vicinity, Boustead has allocated land and contributed in excess of RM1 million for the construction of a mosque, and donated land for the construction of a Chinese school.

In Mutiara Damansara Selangor, the Group constructed a RM2 million police station as part of our contribution in ensuring the presence of a good and strong police operation in the area. Of course our most notable contribution to the community and the surrounding areas was the development and construction of the Surian tunnel to the cost of RM21.4 million completed in 2004. This single largest effort has helped to alleviate the flow of traffic not only to Mutiara Damansara but also to more than ten other developments within the larger demographics of this area.

The Group has also demonstrated its commitment towards the Government's PINTAR project which aims to help raise awareness on the importance of education and improve the standards of academic excellence amongst under-privileged and under-performing schools by adopting one of the underprivileged schools.

In our bid to help the students, the Group has conducted motivational programmes, provided subsidies for schools trips as well as free tuition classes. These are some examples of the support that has been provided by the Group and we will continue to work together with the school to enhance the level of education.

As one of the leading GLCs, we have taken on an added responsibility of assisting in the development of young professional Malaysians especially the unemployed ones. To this end, we have introduced and tailored a special programme for them namely the Boustead Graduate Internship Programme. This outreach effort features a 12-month internship programme where unemployed graduates are assigned to selected operating units within the Group to gain valuable work exposure under the mentorship and guidance of experienced managers. The primary objective is to ensure that these graduates are well-equipped to secure employment in the future.

Given our heavy involvement in the plantation sector in Malaysia, we have introduced an oil palm development project involving a 14,000-hectare Native Customary Rights land in Sarawak. This project has borne positive results by improving the economy of participating landowners as well as for the community at large. The natives themselves are shareholders of this viable project with a 30% stake.
