MALAYSIA CAMPUS SET TO SPEARHEAD
TOP-NOTCHED TERTIARY EDUCATION IN THE REGION
Malaysia’s aspiration to become
the centre for educational excellence in the region takes another positive
step forward with the official opening of the brand new state-of-the-art learning
and teaching facility of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC)
on 26 September 2005.
The new campus, which sits on a 101-acre site close to Semenyih, 30km south of Kuala Lumpur, is the first purpose built campus of a British university out of the United Kingdom.
Y.A.B. Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia on behalf of the Prime Minister, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi was at hand to officiate the opening ceremony of the new campus. Also in attendance were Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir bin Toyo, Menteri Besar of Selangor; senior government officials; captains of industries; and senior officials from the University of Nottingham, UK.
“This move to our brand new campus is indeed a significant milestone for the Malaysia Campus as it is not only a reflection of our commitment to become one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in this country but also the University of Nottingham’s continued confidence in the education sector’s growth potential in this country and region.” said Sir Colin Campbell, Vice Chancellor University of Nottingham, UK.
Since opening its doors in Kuala Lumpur in September 2000, with just over 90 students, the student population has now grown to an international population of 1300 students from more than 30 countries.
The new campus in Semenyih, built at a cost of RM120 million offers high quality learning and living environment. Facilities include laboratories, library, sports complex, and Student Association building, bookshop, café and convenience stores, amongst others.
